Sunday 29 June 2008

Today we have planned to reach Ranua, Finland via Route 78 which is around 54 miles away and well South of the Arctic Circle.

Good nights kip in our posh digs, very little to repack, nothing needed from our own kit as all supplied.

Breakfasted and away by 09:00 despite Miles locking us out of the cabin by letting the door slam behind us... Uh oh, could have been one of those naked moments in the hotel corridor. Luckily no corridor and plenty of clothing for us both!

Very hot and dry from the off which is a welcome change after we'd started to rust with all the rain we've been having.

Followed the bike path adjacent to Route 78 out of Rovaniemi and headed South West. Our route here split from that of the 'common' cycle tourists as they all seem to be continuing along the shorter 75-4.

We've had enough of the admittedly light traffic and daft driving. 78 proved much quieter and a little more picturesque, more like Northern Norway.

Continued along deserted tree and forest lined roads coming across Reindeer from time to time. No major ascents or descents though the wind was on our bow blowing (gently) from the South West. This proved just enough to stop us engaging Hyper Drive and had us pedalling downhill unlike yesterday.

Stopped for coffee and buns after an hour and a half at a roadside café then bashed on. This part of Finland is so much like bits of the USA. Very sparsely populated, straight roads, lots of hunting & fishing and a penchant for inbreeding. Ha!

Arrived into Ranua around 14:30, shopped to buy dinner in the supermarket and then cycled the last couple of miles to the campsite.

Had a major mossie blitz in the cabin on arrival after letting a load in when we entered. Gonked for a couple of hours, showered, ate and slept some more.

Miles' knees are hurting a bit. Rearranged his SPD's yesterday so hopefully in a day or so, they'll be OK. For today, the 'Doctor' prescribed icing with a packet of frozen mixed veg! You never know, we might even eat them afterwards!

Total today 54 miles and 315m of ascent. Total trip 521 miles

Enough for now, more Southerly ramblings tomorrow.

Back soon. Miles & Tracey.

Friday 27 June 2008

Rest day in Sodankyla, Finland - double hurrah!! Arrived gopping wet yesterday and spread everything out in our cabin to dry, including pitching the tent in the middle of the floor!

We've found with the combination of rain and mossies, it's best to use campsite cabins where available rather than camping. As we get into less damp and insect infested climes, we'll up the camping quota. Wordy excuse for being a pair of soft Southern jessies....ha!

Spent our morning off attending to all those little jobs that go by the wayside
When you spend all day on the road.

All rank gear nicely laundered, bike serviced and everything else dried, aired and repacked.

Spent the afternoon in the bright lights of Sodankyla. Made the impetuous purchases of oil (for the bike), mossie nets (for the Goff noggins) and visited the Library and Tourist Information bureau to ponce Internerd connectivity.

We were slung out of the Library after 10 mins as they were closing at 15:00! Government Servants are lazy ba$tard$ regardless of Country!

Spent the evening gonking and dossing preparing for our return to the daily grind tomorrow.

Total today 0 miles and 0m of ascent!

Saturday 28 June 2008

Packed and left our comfy cabin at 09:00 in light mizzle. Seems 48 hours of non stop torrential rain is just not enough for the Eau Gods of Finland.

Never mind, it soon brightened up to battleship grey and temps hovered around the region of B.B.B.Baltic in the Bathroom. Good news? Wind from the West so across our bows rather than down our throats.

Destination today; campsite outside Vikajarvi, Finland. Around 60 miles.

With a combination of rested legs, minimal hills and zero head wind, the turbo charged Goff's got the hammer down and burned some Finnish tarmac.

Saw a few more Reindeer and aggressive/lazy/crap Finnish drivers who insisted on wiping their wing mirrors down our offside panniers. Plonkers of the first water....

Scenery a bit, ermm, samey. Trees, straight roads and a few houses/farmsteads.

Weather brightened as the day progressed and we stopped for a pancake and coffee in a Chinese restaurant en route!

Arrived at our destination for the day; Vikajarvi in very good time to find the campsite shown on the map to be a figment of Monsieur Michelin's imagination. Refuelled on CAKE and coffee, mingled with the inbreds and then shot off to knock off another 15 miles into Rovaniemi, where Santa lives. Big, walloping, triple HURRAH!

Much to Tracey's disappointment, whistled past Santa's Village on the way into town. Suffice to say Tracey's disappointment turned into Miles' chagrin in very short order....

Santa's Village is bang on the Arctic circle and is where the package tours bus kids into each Christmas for expensive rendezvous with the 'real Santa Claus' in Lapland. Hmmm, bit like a Disney version and I'm not sure I'd bother....if I had kids, errm or still believed in Santa or, errmm, well you get the point.

Anyway, we later found Santa, being at a bit of a loose end, was off getting radical surfing in Hawaii so wasn't in anyway.....

Scooted the final few miles into Rovaniemi, battled with town traffic for the first time this trip and found the best digs so far in a poshish ski resort just outside town. Unfortunately, no snow...boooo!

Spirits were lifted however when we found our room had its own Sauna which we made very good use of. Miles suggested sleeping in it to acclimatise for Greece but this idea was very sensibly torpedoed by SWMBO.

Total today a massive 84 miles and 490m of ascent. Total trip 467 miles.

Enough for now, more Southerly ramblings tomorrow.

Back soon. Miles & Tracey.

25 & 26 June 2008

Apologies for the tardy updates up to yesterday, having real problems getting Internerd access.

Wednesday 25 June 2008

Today, Ivalo to Vuotso via the E75-4. Away from the campsite at around 09:15 in bright sunshine. Followed the cycle path for a couple of miles to avoid being taken out by the sometime thoughtless Finnish drivers. Plenty of gentle ups and downs to keep us amused mostly with a side order of head wind for good measure.

Met a mad Swiss couple who were en route to Nordkapp having cycled 32000km in 26 months! Put our efforts into perspective... Had a natter for half an hour before continuing on our merry way.

One very heavy shower had us donning full waterproofs and getting our heads down to grind the miles out to our campsite in Vuotso.

Arrived into Vuotso (Finland) around 16:30 where we ran into a slightly deranged couple from the former GDR. They spent half an hour waxing lyrical as to how it was preferable to wait 15 years to be eligible for a Trabant under the old regime rather than enjoying the fruits of modern society post reformation... Not sure what the correct answer is. Shortage of cardboard cars or rank consumerism.....

He was riding a single speed bike fully loaded (not designed as SS just fubared) and she a three speed. They were camping wild and enjoying themselves.. Good on em!

To our consternation (not to mention slight dismay), we found our planned campsite to be non existent so we were faced with an additional 30 miles or camping wild in the woods. We chose the latter as did the entire local population of Mosquitoes.

A rapid dinner was consumed before we took refuge in the tent from the voracious little blighters. The little buggers in these parts eat men whole!

Total today a meagre 48 miles and 510m of ascent.

Thursday 26 June 2008

After a slightly restless night and a speedy al fresco (mitt Mosquito) breakfast we upped and awayed in the rain shortly after 09:30.

The rain stayed with us all day and rapidly had us soaked through to the last Euro note.

Stopped after an hour for a warm and a pancake at a roadside Sami tourist trap. Avoided the tat and spent time in their authentic tee-pee complete with open wood fire and reindeer hides to sit on.

All too soon, we were back on the road with the heavens trying to increase our bodies water content from 99 to 100 percent.

Got our heads down and billy whizzed into Sodankyla, Finland for the night and our first rest day tomorrow. Yay!

Rented a cabin (AKA shed) for a couple of nights to dry us and the gear out

Not much to see today apart from water in its various forms though the landscape has flattened out and the head wind scuttled around to follow us. Double yay!

Total today 53 miles and only 140m of ascent.

Tomorrow; rest!

Back soon. Miles & Tracey.

June 19/20/21/22/23/24 2008

Thursday 19 June 2008

Away to the airport slightly later than expected then roadworks shut the A1! Miserable journey down to Heathrow but still arrived at 05:10.

Checked in the tandem without drama, oh what innocents we are!

Flight left for Oslo on time and, on arrival, we waited patiently for the tandem after celebrating the arrival of four panniers and one big black sausage!

Well we waited and waited. After being fobbed off by the SAS ground staff for an hour or so the conclusion was reached Disharmony II was MIA. In fact, she hadn't even left Blighty!

We made our connecting flights to Tromso, Hammerfest and finally, Honningvag. Escaped from the airport at Hammerfest for Norwegian Pizza, apparently their main staple. Suffice to say, Hammerfest is a dump though the Pizza was nice if not requiring direct funding from the Bank of England before a purchase could be made!

Arrived in Honningsvag on schedule at 22:10. Hassled the nice SAS man about our non-arrival and we were promised delivery the next day. Taxi to our campsite, followed by bed and Z's.

Friday 20 June 2008

Managed to drag our sorry ar$es out of bed at 10:00 (well we did miss a nights kip) and breakfasted, chatterboxed with anyone that looked human and waited for the bike.

She eventually arrived at 13:45 looking slightly battered and bruised. Methinks SAS now stands for 'Scratches and Scrapes' as our once pristine bike now looked decidedly second hand. Hey ho, at least it turned up and we have transport...

Spent a couple of hours prepping the bike then set off for Nordkapp at around 16:00.

How we laughed at the 1:10 hill from the campsite to get us underway. At least we were without all our gear or we'd definitely have been walking.

The weather at least was sunny-ish though very windy. We made reasonable progress reaching Europe's most Northerly point 2.5 hours later.

After the obligatory photo's and a Belgian waffle (eh?) we set off to return to the campsite.

Nightmare! Very strong head winds, big hills and leaden legs had us walking the worst sections. Got back to mission control around 22:00 still in full daylight. In fact, it don't go dark round these 'ere parts so at least lights are redundant.

Total today a very hard won 32 miles and 1200m of ascent.

Saturday 21 June 2008

Tardy start had us leaving the campsite to start our journey south after 10:00. The bike, fully kitted up with all our camping gear, clothes and some food was carrying around 30kg extra. PLEASE may we have a tail wind and fewer hills today?

Planned destination of Dollejohka was extended slightly to make a campsite. Revised destination; Olderfjord. Around 60 miles south down the E69.

Pretty good days cycling. Route hugged the coastline for much of the day and we had the pleasure (of seeing) 3 Eagles and many Reindeer.

Strange experience of cycling through numerous road tunnels the longest 7km Everytime we exited one, it felt like we were entering a sauna!

After a relatively sprightly ride in torrential rain (dodged that bullet!) we booked into what is probably the sh1tyest camping accommodation ever. Hey ho, when you're knacked, sh1t holes are like palaces!

Total today 65 miles and 765m of ascent.

Sunday 22 June 2008

Escaped from our doss hole at around 09:00 to dry but very overcast weather

Riding straight forward enough. No major climbs or descents and the wind must have been somewhere behind as it didn't slow us down at all.

Overtaken by a trio of campervans replete with Geordies whom we had met at Nordkapp. They've been doing an extended tour of Finland and Norway and are heading off to Sweden. Personally, I think it was an away fixture for the Whitley Bay Swingers Club! They kindly stopped at about our 30 miles mark and supplied hot drinks. Very nice, just hope they don't want us to join their club!!

Landscape changing as we head south, now Juniper forests carpeted in Billberries and, da da daaaaa.....tree's. It's amazing just how bleak northern Norway is - bit like Milton Keynes on a bad day!

Heavy rain most of the day had us pretty much soaked through. Stopped for supplies at a garage about 10 miles from the campsite which was lucky as they had nothing to offer apart from a dry, warm 10'x10'; wooden gingerbread house by the lake.

Got talking to an American chapee who has cycled from Helsinki and is going back via the Norwegian Fjords and Sweden. He managed to pi$$ his companion off so much in the first couple of days that he (the companion) abandoned the trip! Some halitosis that! The 'merican hadn't bought ahead so was going hungry, I'm just grateful he didn't call in airstrikes to divert us whilst he stole ours!

Total today an easy 55 miles and 550m of ascent.

Monday 23 June 2008

Left our lovely woodland retreat at 09:30.....in the rain. Only lasted an hour or so until normal service was resumed. Hellish 10 mile ascent to start the day had us puffing and panting in short order. Scenery changed to peat bogs and rolling hills, bit like mid Wales without the Welsh!

Rolling hills rolled by for the next 30 or so miles when we arrived in Karasjok for lunch. The civilised healthy option of burger and chips was had in the local transport cafe with the local council road workers for dining companions.

After our blow out, we waddled unsteadily to the tandem and wiggled off to continue the journey. 10 miles or so later had us entering Finland ...hurrah! Our second country and first major milestone passed.

Knocked out another 25 miles of rolling scenery to arrive at our Kielajoki campsite at around 17:30.

A long hard day in the saddle had us initially monosyllabic and then uttering nowt but Z's for a couple of hours.

We perked up to shower and eat then hit the sack early for another 60 odd miler tomorrow to Ivalo.

Total today 65 miles and 815m of ascent.

Tuesday 24 June 2008

Left the site at around 09:15 in warm sunshine. Turns out we had the campsite to ourselves which was very pleasant.

Very rolling countryside for the first 30 odd miles. Horrible sharp ups followed by what seemed minimal downs. Followed Route 95 in pretty scenery until we arrived in Inari for lunch.

The town was re-characterised (by us at least) as a 'One Whore Town' as it didn't seem to have any horses (just Reindeer). Apparently Inari is the Sami (Finnish indigenous Indian) capital of the world though the place doesn't really do this accolade justice.

Turned south down the E75-4 heading for Ivalo, our destination for the day. Wind grew in strength and swung to the front...uh oh. We had the mother of all headwinds for the last 20 miles or so which resulted in high levels of knackeradge and withering of senses of humour!

Booked into the campsite and crashed for an hour or so as the heavens opened outside. At least we'd dodged the storm. After the application of smelling salts and injections of adrenaline, cycled back into the centre of the town to visit the supermarket for dinner provisions. Lovely Caesars salad and salami sandwiches followed by....more gonking.

Total today 64 miles and 620m of ascent.

Tomorrow; more southerly perambulations mitt overloaded tandem.

Back soon. Miles & Tracey.

Wednesday 18 June 2008

Here We Go....

Well here goes with a quick update....

The last couple of weeks of preparation seem to have flown by. We've researched, planned and finalised the route, got all the maps and materials we need and are ready to take the big silver bird to Norway tomorrow.

Flight leaves LHR at 07:20 which means an 03:00 departure from home. The tandem is all packed up and on the back of the car and the panniers are packed with all the necessary camping, cooking and personal gear (mainly Tracey's pants!) and ready to go. Might have to stop on the way to the airport to buy an extra donkey to carry all the stuff we seem to be taking! I can't face weighing the gear in case it's too disappointing but I think we're probably under 30kg excluding the tandem which is well within the airline weight limit. Not bad for a 3 month trip!

We'll be flying from Heathrow to Oslo then changing plane and onto Trondheim, change plane and on to Hammerfest, change plane and on to Honnigsvag which is 20 or so miles short of the North Cape. The four flights should see us arrive at around 22:00, the last couple being in little puddle jumpers (Dash 8's). Hopefully they'll be big enough to take the tandem and 300 pairs of knickers!

Our plan for Friday 20/06/08 is to get all the kit sorted and ready then take a leisurely ride to the Cape and back to Honnigsvag for the second night. We have digs booked for the first and second nights to ease ourselves in gently. Saturday? Go south young man as the adventure begins....

More to follow....
